Hi Steven,

Thanks for your comment.

It''s not something we''ve tried and, as a support unit, couldn''t possibly recommend!

If you do intend to have a go at your establishment, please ensure you''re using a stand-alone system and not on your live installation!

We''ll be advising full SQL Server users to use SQL 2005 for the time being and upgrade via Capita migration routines when moving to SQL 2008 in 2010.

If in doubt, speak to your SIMS support colleagues.

Kind regards,

John.

Will the current version of SIMS run on SQL 2008 as it is now? Anyone tried? (albeit unsupported by Capita!?)

Hi Sam,

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Regarding FMSApplicationSetup.exe, there is a new installer available but only from the "installable CD" which is for new installations. There is also a new version of SIMSInst.exe.

I''m hoping to get the new SETUPS folder out to all our supported schools soon - it''s on our ever-growing list of things to do - so you''d be welcome to a copy.

As I mentioned in my initial post, we''re keen to get involved with the development of the Deployment Server early doors. You can keep an eye on SupportNet for details, but I''ll give you a nudge if I hear anything.

Hi John,

That was pretty much how they sold it to us at the single site seminar. They were hopeful that there would be some sort of reporting function in a central console similar to how WSUS works for Windows Updates so that installation progress could be monitored. At the moment I can use a tool from Microsoft called GPInventory to get the version numbers of all the pulsar.exe''s but the PCs have to be on at the time when I run it.

It will be a massive improvement to be able to install and update SIMS reliably without needing a user to log on. We have most computers in school configured for Wake On Lan already, so it would just be a case of starting them up overnight to take the update then shutting them down an hour later. Maybe they could even get their console to handle some of that.

I''m not sure about using it to install FMS. Karl and I have probably installed FMS 20 times between us and I don''t think any 2 have been the same. They certainly never go as per the documentation, which I think currently says: "run s:\sims\setups\fms\FMSApplicationSetup.exe" !

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the comment.

In Capita’s defence, they were investigating the possibility of using the reporting engine in SQL 2005, but this would’ve meant that our Express users (all primary, nursery and special schools) could only run reports and not create or edit them.

I do have some information on the new Deployment Server. I’ll post another article on the blog so you can fill in the gaps!

Thanks for the heads-up on this. Funnily enough we were at a single site seminar only a few weeks ago and there was no mention of a move to MSSQL 2008. There was much talk of the switch to the MSSQL Reporting tools, which I suspect is going to be a Good Thing overall.

I can''t say I''m thrilled at the prosepct of another SQL upgrade. The last one required incense and mystical incantations, but we made it through in one piece.

They did mention (in a separate track) at the seminar that they are completely revamping the client deployment to effectively allow tightly controlled "push" deployment of the software. If it works as advertised it will be a million miles better than the status quo. Let me know if you missed it and I''ll see what I can drag from memory!
